Seisco Sh-07 Electric Micro Boiler 7kw (23,890 Btu) for Hydronic Space Heating Review

Seisco Sh-07 Electric Micro Boiler 7kw for Hydronic Space HeatingI put in a radiant hydronic infloor heating system in a small cabin in 2005.I did the work myself using pex al pex tubing in a thin slab(1.5inches) of concrete over a wood floor above an open crawl space.I did, of course, insulate between the floor joists.Because my cabin is only 16x20 ft in outside dimensions I didn't need a large boiler so after a heat loss calulation I choose a 7kw unit from Seisco. This is the fifth winter I've relied on it as my primary heat source and so far it has functioned flawlessly.Since I put the micro-boiler on the wall I have not touched it for any reason.Winter's here in Minnesota are long and cold but the Seisco micro boiler keeps pumping out the heat.I would certainly purchase a Seisco again and would recommend it to anyone seriouly considering hydronic infloor heat.

In-Sink-Erator W-152 Electric Water Heater Review

In-Sink-Erator W-152 Electric Water HeaterWe bought this as a point of use heater and it is performing well after a month of use. However, the flimsy construction of the outer skin and the annoying design that requires a front panel to be removed in order to adjust the temperature setting was quite a disappointment.

GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System Review

GE Merlin Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water SystemAt the time when GE was about to announce this, I was a GE water products dealer. I agree this has some great features, delivers more water per minute, saves spaces and eliminates the tank associated with other models but... A water softener is highly recommended before the Merlin because if your total hardness is over 12 grains, you may face replacing membranes annually. That is 2 at a minimum cost of $80 each. after having installed over 50 of these, We have had calls for most reporting lack of performance within the first year which I attribute to lack of use. these need to be run frequently not just for the occasional glass of water. It is good for light commercial use like a restaurant but not the average home. It produces a higher total dissolved finished product than all other R/O membranes which is why it has high flow at residential line pressure than others which product lower TDS at reduced flows. These require high pressure to operated at optimum performance and are quite weak at pressures below 50 psi.
The air gap mounting that comes with the unit only works with stainless steel or cast iron sinks not granite counters. When I inquired with GE about this, they said there were no plans to change this.
GE has since sold 80% of it's water products division to Pentair and it remains to be seen how this will bode for the Merlin.
The Merlin can only be operated on treated water from a municipal supply and will foul quickly on many well waters.
I recommend this only where you can service this yourself, have a working knowledge of reverse osmosis and can backwash this about once a month without paying for this service.

AirTap A7 Review

AirTap A7Though I didn't purchase my Airtap through Amazon, I thought it would be worthwhile to share my experiences here, since I haven't seen too many reviews on the web.

First, my Airtap has been installed for almost two weeks. It came boxed up securely, and arrived with no damage.I paid $699 with free shipping, though I have seen it since for $599 with free shipping.I originally started with a 50-gallon (new) Whirlpool water heater with factory-installed nipples. These were a nightmare to remove (necessary in order to install the Airtap).I ended up exchanging this tank for a smaller (40-gallon) one that didn't have pre-installed nipples.

Installation, other than described above, was relatively easy.Incoming water temperature was 49 degrees, and it took the airtap about 2.5 hours to bring the water up to 115 (my original temperature setting).I soon realized that this unit does not maintain a constant temperature in the tank; rather, it keeps it within a 15 degree range (turns on when the temperature get to 15 degress below the set point). My first shower after some laundry, dishes, etc. was warm, but not hot.I realized that this is because it was at the lower end of the temp range (probably about 100 degrees) due to it turning on just as I started my shower.

I turned the thermostat up to 130 at the recommendation of the manufacturer, and it has helped tremendously.I am generally happy with this product due to it's energy savings. If you are considering one, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1.This doesn't keep your water at a constant temperature, and you may find the temp less than ideal, even after sitting unused all day or night.

2.The recovery time is much longer than with the electric elements/gas burner, which could cause problems if you plan on several showers/high demand in a short period of time.

3.It does make noise when running, so if you are bothered by noise, this may not be for you.

4.Though I couldn't find any stamp on the unit, after reading about it and seeing the printing style on the box, this appears to be yet another product imported from China.

I would recommend a larger tank to allow for more storage (around 80 gallons). This would probably alleviate hot water shortages to some extent.

Overall, I would recommend this water heater. There are others on the market, too.The Airtap seems to be well designed and built, and it should pay for itself in enegy savings in less than a year.We will have to see how durable it is in the long run, though.Just be aware of the few quarks (above) as compared to your existing water heater, and I'm sure you'll find it adequate, though it may leave you out of hot water occasionally.I guess it could takes a little adjustment to the typical American "I want it now" lifestyle.

I heat my home with free wood, so the heat used to heat the water in the winter is also free.Keep in mind that if you use gas, oil, propane or electric to heat your home, you are using this heat that you already paid for once to then heat your water; you are essentially paying to heat the air and then paying to transfer the heat into the water, though it is still much more efficient than using electric elements.

On the other hand, in the summer, you can look at it as using hot air that your AC would normally dump outside to heat your water - basically "free" hot water in the summer (or free air conditioning, however youwant to look at it).

Hope this helps!!!

Rheem RTG20147 3"/5" Horizontal Direct Vent Kit for RTG-53DV Review

Rheem RTG20147 3'/5' Horizontal Direct Vent Kit for RTG-53DVWe ordered both the water heater and the vent kit. When we got ready to install, we noticed that the water heater nozzle is 3 inches in diameter, and the vent kit nozzle is 2 & 1/4 inches in diameter.Make any sense? No.I contacted Rheem and they advised that there is an adapter for this problem for $34.99.I requested an explanation as to why this was this way...other than the obvious money-making scheme.I have not heard back yet.So I can't actually review if the product works well or not, but I can tell you I was royally po'ed about this adapter thing.

Bosch AquaStar Propane Tankless Water Heater #125HX-LP Review

Bosch AquaStar Propane Tankless Water Heater #125HX-LPI own 5 cabins that I operate as a lodging business.I replaced an old propane water tank in one cabin with a Bosch AquaStar 125B-LP - same as the HX except with a standing pilot. That model is great!Works perfectly. When it came time to replace another cabin's old propane water heater, I wanted the same model but couldn't find one available so I decided on the 125HX-LP instead.Thought it was a bonus that it would even gain me a $300 tax credit because of its energy-efficiency.Well, I have been very disappointed in this model and the tax credit doesn't make up for it.It is VERY touchy with water pressure. If the volume of water going through the tank isn't just exactly right, the unit won't ignite...sometimes the unit lights, sometimes it doesn't.It's been quite frustrating.Personally, I think the cabin water pressure is quite high for what I'm used to elsewhere, so I'm not sure just how much this unit needs for optimum operation. If it wasn't such a pain to get another unit and uninstall this one, I'd send it back!Unless you've got the water pressure of a fireman's hose coming through your pipes, I wouldn't recommend this model.

Product Description:
The Bosch 125HX-LP AquaStar propane tankless water heater can cut your water-heating costs by up to 50 percent while providing 4.3 gallons of hot water per minute, heating water on demand and supplying hot water at a rate of 4.3 gallons per minute -- enough to meet the needs of one major application (shower, dishwasher, etc.) at a time. Its gas valve and burners turn off when there's no demand for hot water, and you can control temperature by using the modulating gas valve. Automatic electronic ignition provides heat quickly, while stainless steel burners and a copper heat exchanger ensure long life. Measuring 8-3/4-by-29-3/4-by-18-1/4 inches, and weighing 44 pounds, this compact heater takes up relatively little space and can be mounted to a wall or in a closet with the included hooks. It is designed to vent vertically as sold, or you can vent horizontally with the optional AQ1 kit. Bosch backs its heater with a 12-year heat exchanger warranty and 2-year parts warranty.

Takagi T-K3-N Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater - 199k BTU Review

Takagi T-K3-N Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater - 199k BTUWe love our Takagi! This heater is doing a great job and we've had it for a year now. With the old boiler type we were going through our 83 liter tank in about 4 weeks (including other appl. as well), but after we installed this unit we are going through 83 ltr. in 6-7 weeks. The run to the Master bedroom is quiet far and the piping is exposed, so it does take just a little bit longer, but not much. I have found that if you turn the water on half way and wait for it to get hot,,,then turn it up all the way it will actually take less time for the hot water to get to you. This unit is small, very easy to install, and I can't say enough about it.

Product Description:
As you can see, the T-K3 incorporates all those "why-don"t-you-have-this?" features into this one new product. Its larger flow capacity through parallel connections will meet the hot-water needs of most high-volume residential applications and many commercial projects, too. In short, the T-K3 fills the gap between the single residential heater and multiple commercial T-M1 units. Performance depends on the temperature of the ground water of course: At a delta T of 60 degrees F in warmer areas - for example, where the winter ground water is 60 degrees F and with the output set at 122 degrees F - the T-K3 will provide a 5.4 GPM, or 324 GPH. In colder areas where the input temperature may be 40 degrees F or less, expect a flow rate about 4.1 GPM, or 246 GPH.

Takagi T-K Jr-NG Natural Gas Flash Natural Gas Compact Tankless Water Heater 5.8 GPM - Can be InstalThis "hot" water heater came with the house we bought. The problem is the water looses heat, rapidly. In fact the water is instantly ice cold without warning(dangerous for Grandmothers). It is less than five years old.The plumber has been to our house a couple times to look at it; as did the previous owners. The last time he was on the phone with Takagi's tech support and they both could not trouble shoot the problem.Everything tech support suggested was checked and the result was; no reason for the cold water problem. The fact is we're wasting more cold water down the drain than saving by having the "on demand" water heater. With the service calls, we're installing a tank water heater.I honestly don't think Takagi could get me to install another of their products in my house, even if it were free.Every bath, shower, laundry load and dish washer load shouldn't be an uphill battle.

Rheem Tankless Water Heater RTG20037 Cosmetic Pipe CoverThe pipe cover come with a bottom unlike some other covers. The pipe cover arrived fine. The rough in for the water heater was not in the specified dimensions for the cover to fit without modification.I had to cut a hole in the bottom to accomdate the 3" drip leg of the gas service.I also cut another hole to accomodate the pressure release valve instead of elbowing the expansion release pipe to the manfacturer provided hole.THe problem was more with the plumber's installation of the water heater than the pipe cover.

Eemax EX95TS 'Thermostatic' Electric Tankless Water HeaterIf you use a tankless water heater eventually you'll learn that they are cheap, unpredictable and will go out at a moments notice. A back up is

for 3 weeks, and then the circuit board sparked, poofed smoke and set off
the smoke alarm. No response from their customer service. This thing didn't even last long enough to get a back up for it. Hopefully someone will make one of these that will last awhile but so far I have not found one and the Eemax certainly has been the worst I have tried so far.

TOTO MS990CGR-01 Neorest Elongated Toilet and Washlet Unit with Metallic Stick Remote, Cotton White Review

TOTO MS990CGR-01 Neorest Elongated Toilet and Washlet Unit with Metallic Stick Remote, Cotton WhiteLet's be open and frank people. In today's overcharged, competitive, frantic world, some of the most quiet, relaxing and deeply intimate times are those we spend in the bathroom, on the toilet. Here we are safe, alone, surrounded by clean, shiny, familiar appliances, some powered by clean electricity, others delivering clean water, hot or cold or in-between as it may please us through plumbing that works and disposing of the spent fluids through quick and efficient drains. The bathroom is that safe and secure place where the light is not too bright but bright enough to allow for reading, the door locks, the air is clean, fresh and fragrant and then... ohhh... then there's our TOTO Sedona Neorest 600 toilet, one of our life's most secret sources of pleasure, the piece de resistance we can sit on, relax, enjoy ourselves and forget about everything else - within legal limits, of course.

The TOTO Neorest 600 comes with a lid that automatically opens upon proximity, an air purifier, a toilet-paper-eliminating washer and drier (the enviroment thanks TOTO for this), automatic flush, a warmable seat, user-controlled water temperature and, of course, TOTO's own Cyclone Flush - better keep your distance.

What's not to like in a TOTO Neorest 600? Well... maybe there is a thing or 2 so, let me write them down:

- remote control batteries hard to find
- not supported by my Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote Control with 3.5-Inch Color Touch Screen
- no iPod/iPhone support
- the Cyclone Flush noise is too loud, could disturb family and neighbors
- self-cleaning only works on the inside but who is going to clean the outside?
- old-school plumber could not fix it when it broke because he wasn't familiar with the electronics
- broadband is fine but there is no WiFi option
- dog can't drink off it because the lid is always closed when not in use
- doesn't work when the power goes out and there is no backup battery or backup generator option for this model
- on a couple of occasions the washer-drier turned itself on before I was finished and then refused to work after I was really done
- it's difficult to toilet-train toddlers because it can't be operated without a license and you can't get a license unless you take the class and pass the exam
- insurance refuses to cover it
- user's manual written in an English I can't understand
- off-shore technical support insists that we go into a video conference every time I call for support
- 30-day free trial not available
- no bidet mode on this model
- no super-saver shipping

Given the above shortcomings I have no choice but remove one star but I so hope that the next release will correct most if not all of them.

Rheem Direct Vent Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-74DVP Review

Rheem Direct Vent Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater For 2-3 Bathroom Homes RTG-74DVPA thoroughly disreputable company. Warranty is worthless. If your Rheem water heater has a 6 year warranty and fails after 3.5 years (as ours did), you may find them using all kinds of questionable tactics to escape responsibility.
On three separate calls to three agents they insisted our heater was 7 years old. They had clearly been trained to say this, the patter was so automatic. When challenged with their own web-site's data, which stated (correctly) that the heater was still under warranty, they did not know what to say and hung up! The house had been built only 3.5 years earlier! And indeed, the heater's body was date-stamped 3.5 years ago. What was going on here? Either Rheem was lying, or the plumber or the plumber's merchant had supplied old product, falsely relabeled. Of course the plumber and his merchant denied that. Finally after a lot of photos, heated phone calls, and intervention by the plumber's merchant in escalating to Rheem management, we discovered the procedure for making a claim.
Rheem's claims are handled by a third party agency, ESIS Risk Management. We supplied photos of the leaking rusty tank and the flooding in the cellar and adjacent room that it had caused. ESIS are apparently tarred with the same dirty brush as Rheem. Despite the overwhelming evidence, ESIS' Susan Fritts insisted there was no proof of defect and that a report was required from a `forensic plumber.' Oh yeah, like we had sabotaged our own heater and voluntarily lived without hot water for two weeks??The forensic exam could cost $1000 and would not be reimbursed even if Rheem were found to be at fault!! Outrageous! That's more than the cost of a new heater!ESIS and Rheem had created an impossible obstacle.
So we were stuck with buying a new heater. Now these things are built like tanks (ha!). They should not fail after 3. 5 years, sitting untouched in a basement. It makes you wonder if Rheem is supplying old refurbs that are falsely relabeled with a new manufacturing date. And then wriggling like crazy to escape any liability.CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Bosch ProTankless GWH C 800 ES NG Tankless Water Heater, Natural Gas Review

Bosch ProTankless GWH C 800 ES NG Tankless Water Heater, Natural GasI have the Natural Gas "NG" version of this. I learned more than I anticipated needing to, on my quest for the perfect tankless water heater. The Bosch 800 series was my perfect model.

While it is now obvious to me why this model is head and shoulders above anything else, you may need to spend some time learning about tankless water heaters to see why it is so significant.

1) Ultra efficient, it has 92% efficiency. Only the top of the line models are this efficient. This means lower yearly costs.
2) Powerful: 10 gpm! This puppy can power most houses that have mutiple showers and sinks. It is their highest flow unit. It can also be daisy chained so another unit can be attached.
3) 15 year PRO warranty. Instead of the 5 year or 10 year of other models.
4) New Technology. This is the only Bosch unit to have the technology to create this efficiency and the cooling benefits.
5) Reliable. Even though it is cutting edge, some of its parts are based on the 715 unit that is very reliable.
6) Easy repair. Bosch has one of the most extensive list of certified repairmen. Also, unlike other companies, most of the parts can be replaced and are easily available, due to its popularity.
8) Low heat. This model has 2 condensers. That is why it is more efficient. The added benefit is that the heat coming out of this is like a hair dryer. Much MUCH cooler than most units.
9) PVC pipe can be used. I dont know of ANY other water heater that can be vented with PVC pipe. That means smaller pipes, easier work, and much cheaper. Normally water heaters need galvanized vent or Stainless steel venting which is extremely expensive. It can easily cost $300 or more.
10) Concentric Venting (one hole). Because the exhaust is so cool, you can use a Concentric Vent to combine both intake and exhaust from one hole (wall or roof). Without this a water heater need TWO 3 or 4 inch in diameter holes, at least 3 feet from each other. So the extremely hot exaust does not get used in the intake and overheat the unit.

NOTE:
I am just a consumer. I am not a guy that fixes these, nor do am I associated with a company that sells them. I just wanted a tankless & researched like crazy. Rheem, Takagi, and Rinnai were other companies who make products I considered.

Eemax SP55 "Single Point" Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Eemax SP55 'Single Point' Electric Tankless Water HeaterVery pleased with replacing old 40 gal. 2 element water heater with the Eemax SP55 Tankless Water Heater. Was able to use existing breaker and 220 wiring. Old water heater was half full of lime/sediment and took up too much room & electicity in garage just for occasional hand washing. SP55 does not accumulate such sediments or waste elect. Like it so much I ordered another model from Eemax. Almost enough volumn to take a shower with perhaps on city water but my well water is too cold for that. Check requirements for other models, some require bigger wire and breakers than tank type water heaters.

Bosch 425HN NG Tankless Water Heater Review

Bosch 425HN NG Tankless Water HeaterNot a lot of difference as far as the home owner is concerned from the 1600H model. This is as stated, a single appliance water heater and with all tankless be aware the actual performance varies widely depending on in fluent water temperatures and gas availability. You can not replace this where your old 40 gallon sat using the same 1/2" gas and vent. It requires a 5" type B vent, 3/4" gas and a .6 gallon per minute flow. It does have a rather poor design on the hydro generator that is susceptible to the most minute particles causing it to fail to create the voltage needed to spark and ignite. Its advantage if you do not have power and want a model that does not have a standing pilot, this is ideal. There is no freeze protection and it can be damaged by cold winter down drafts and not a good candidate for areas that experience freezing temperatures.
Unless you have a manometer and multi meter to check values, you can not work on this your self if service is needed and don't expect most plumbers to have them either.
Bosch does not have anywhere nearly enough trained service personnel to field support their products and their installation manuals are not a help here.
Due diligence is a must before buying any tankless water heater. Call their technical support and ask yourself, do I want to spend this much time waiting for help if and when the time comes? At the end of the day, it's all about service. Take it from a former Bosch Authorized Service Provider...

Eemax EX280T2T Series Three Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Eemax EX280T2T Series Three Electric Tankless Water Heater***See Update Below***
The unit works well. Was easily installed. Water heat is fine for our small-demand house (2bed/2bath/1500SF). The only thing that takes some getting used to is the minimum flow requirement. There's no way to get any hot water without turning a given fauct on at over 50% capacity. And single-knob showers can get a little tricky to balance.
NOTEZ BIEN:
Before installing, verify that your grid tie-in is sufficient. My panel is 200A, but the utility company tied in with a wire only capable of carrying 100A. This was fine for my house until this unit was installed. It requires 3@40A breakers, which was no problem...plenty of room on the board. But now, whenever the hot water flows, the lights throughout the house start a pulsing. I've called my retail provider, my utilities service provider, and the service director several times over the last 2 weeks, and can't get anyone to get out here and run thicker copper. It's not too annoying, but I'm concerned that the wire's going to fry if they don't get their act together and figure out whose job it is to fix this.
****Update****
Even with the electrical issues taken care of, the unit I bought, which worked well for several months, started acting up on me. Intermittent hot/lukewarm was a major issue. No flow problems: was running a shower alone. After some time, I opened the box and noticed that the unit had a leak in one of the 3 "coils" (tubes, really). I called the manufacturer, they verified the warranty info, and sent me a new unit. The new unit worked for about 6 months before it also stopped providing hot water. Not sure how I ended up with 2 dogs, but that was enough. No leaking the second time around, but I gave up and went with a regular tank, as the house was by then a rental.
I'd drop it to one star if it wasn't for the great customer service I received.

EZ Outdoor Tankless Water Heater - 7.4 GPM - Propane Gas (LPG) - Stainless Steel - Ventless - Large Capacity - FREE SHIPPING Review

EZ Outdoor Tankless Water Heater - 7.4 GPM - Propane Gas - Stainless Steel - Ventless - Large Capacity - FREE SHIPPINGAnother Chinese piece of junk at a grossly misrepresented output.
Five major problems with this:
1-The unit is a 109.000 BTU which at 81% efficiency (hopefully!), will give you about 92.000 usable BTU . That in exchange is giving you about 3.2 gallons at 70F.
Totally overstated and misleading. It is actually rated by the Chinese manufacturer at 26 liters at 25C temp increase. That is a long cries from 7.4 gallons/minute stated on the title. No wander they do not list the BTU at all and you have to call to find out.
2-It uses a 2 stage gas valve which in no way shape or form will be able to maintain a constant temperature under different volumes of water. Stage 1 is 3/4 open and stage 2 is a 100% gas valve open. 7 years ago inferior technology copy from Takagy.
3. Weight: The weight of a unit is given by the weight of the heater exchanger. For a unit of that size the weight of the unit should be around 46Lb. Heater exchanger is "paper thin" No wander it comes with only 1 year warranty.
4. "Stainless steel" Don't get your hopes high: Only the front cover is stainless steel, (which grade?... only the Chinese factory knows!)The rest... same ordinary steel.
5. "Vent less" they do even know what "vent less" is ?

PS:Note to reseller:The big hole on the front of the unit is for unit to vent out and the holes on the bottom is for the unit to vent in.

Bosch AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #250SX-NG Review

Bosch AquaStar Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #250SX-NGI have used the Internet extensively for information on tankless water heaters and this 250SX model in particular, so I wanted to fully detail my experiences accurately for others. In short, these things aren't for everyone, it depends on your usage and tolerance, your handyman ability, and the quality of plumbing in your home particularly water pressure. That being said, I am personally very happy with my 250SX set up, but I had to make some adjustments.

Usage: I only use hot water at the kitchen faucet, dishwasher, and clothes washer about once a week. I take a 10 or 15 minute shower every morning. About once a month I fill my 75 gallon jacuzzi. Rarely do I use hot water in the bathroom sinks for other uses, I often wash my hands in cold water. Other than the jacuzzi water and shower, I use very little hot water. Having a hot water tank of 75 gallons, or even 40 gallons, just does not make sense. The 250SX needs 0.8 gallon flow to activate the heating element. I take fairly hot showers and I keep the 250SX at 124 degrees. Because an extra 0.8 gallon flows through the pipes before the 250SX activates, some complain that it takes too long to get hot water, but I think it is no big deal. A bigger problem for some: when you turn off the hot water then turn it on again, your hot water that was in the pipe comes first, then the 0.8 cold water, then it gradually gets hot again. That is a little annoying. Imagine your wife turning the hot water on and off to wash dishes. A hot water tank would just keep the hot water flowing ready for on/off use, but not a tankless unit. It wasn't too big of a deal, but in the end I decided to solve the problem by adding a 6 gallon hot water tank (Ariston GL6+) in series after the 250SX. The 250SX has 3/4 inch NPT water threads, to keep the pressure constant make sure you get a small holding tank that also has 3/4 inch NPT water threads. The hot water always flows through the hot water tank last and the outward source recieves hot water from the small holding tank first. Also, the 0.8 gallon of cold water flows into the small tank first where it is mixed with 6 gallons tanked hot water. Set the small tank at about 4 degrees higher than the 250SX and you won't even know the difference in temperature; problem solved. One guy told me that his wife insists that the hot water must be 140 degrees in the dishwasher, but she also likes luke-warm showers. The problem here is that the 250SX does not get the 0.8 gallon of flow when she is in the shower. Add the fact that she messes with the shower's water controls and the unit goes from on (hot) to off (cold) while she is in the shower. Apparently, that really pisses her off. The small holding tank helps with this too, but there are several ways to solve this problem: 1) get a new wife, 2) use Bosch's remote temperature control (about $120 extra) at the shower to turn down the temperature, 3) turn on a bathroom faucet while she showers (wasting a lot of hot water) 4) my new dishwasher (this recently went out too) has an option to superheat the water it uses (it must have a separate water heater). Some people complain that the unit causes less hot water pressure, but that is not my experience at all. It helps to have good water pressure to begin with (mine is 70 psi) but maybe the hard piping to keep 3/4 of water flowing without bottlenecks helps too. Some people complain that the unit makes a high pitched noise, but that is not my experience either. I will say this: for a short time I had it connected to the previous tanks 1/2 inch gas line. It did make this noise a little when two hot water appliances worked at the same time; probably has to do with needing more gas than available in the 1/2 inch line. In that case, that problem is solved by hard piping a 3/4 inch gas pipe to the 250SX. It seems to me all these problems are related to particular usage or to improper installation; READ THE INSTALLATION MANUAL.

Installation: The venting exhaust must be on its own line, NOT combined with say your furnace exhaust. Also, be sure you incline the exhaut pipe upward if venting horizontally as the manufacturer requires. Incidentally, the model's installation instructions are available on the Internet, READ THE INSTALLATION MANUAL. The 250SX drinks in 175,000 BTU when it is working hard, that might mean you will need to upgrade your gas line. In my case, I was replacing my furnace as well as the water heater. The guy that installed the furnace, used the previous 3/4 inch gas line for the 250 SX, then ran another gas line for the new furnace. Since it was part of the bid, I have no way of knowing the cost, but I would guess the cost at $75 of the furnace bid. To insure that the 250SX gets sufficient gas, the installation manual strongly suggests that the gas line be hard piped to the unit which is what the furnace guy did for me. Another guy told me to hard pipe the water lines to unsure that there are no bottle necks in the water pressure. Apparently, a3/4 inch flex line is actually 5/8 inch in the middle. I sweated the 3/4 inch copper pipe from the cold water source to the 250SX, then to the 6 gallon holding tank, then to the hot water line; all water runs through 3/4 inch copper pipe with unions for quick uninstall if either the 250SX or the holding tank needs to be replaced someday. You will need an outlet for the 250SX pilotless ignition, but I think it takes very little power. If you install the Ariston tank, it requires a 20 amp circuit hardwired to the unit. So, you've got to know a little about electrical, plumbing for copper pipe, and basic handyman skills for everything else. I found it to be a fun little installation project. You can also contract out the installation but it is rather expensive.

Costs: I bought mine at a local hardware store for $899 + tax. The expenses don't stop there, if properly installed this model MUST HAVE a special sealed 3 inch stainless steel pipe for hot gas (carbon monoxide) exhaust, plus a wall thimble and a termination hood. I needed 13.5 feet of exhaust venting (AL29 type) which I bought on the Internet (Cinnabar) for $292. The optional small holding tank (Ariston GL6+) cost me $174 (from Ace hardware on the Internet, have them send it to one of their stores). There is another $150 to $200 in other materials, including a 20 amp circuit plus 12 gauge wire for the small holding tank which needs to be hard wired, copper pipe, etc. The 250SX itself needs an outlet for pilotless ignition. You are supposed to have both on separate curcuits, but I felt this was not necessary, so I put them on the same circuit, outlet and hardwire to the small tank. In total, everything cost me about $1650 with the small tank and installing everything myself. Figure more if you need to increase your gas line as these things suck 175,000 BTUs when loaded, plus $800 to $1500 more if you have someone else install it for you. I got a quote for about $800 for the install not including the small holding tank or the extra for the increased gas line.

Analysis: I figure a quality large water heater, big enough for my Jacuzzi, would be about $800 installed. I will get $300 back in a Federal Tax credit, so the tankless unit setup is $550 in extra expenses that have to be made up in savings ($1650 - $800 -$300 = $550). I figure I save $8 a month in energy costs when I subtract the $2.50 a month to operate the small 6 gallon water tank. It depends on how much hot water you use, others claim they save $20 a month. That means it will take me about 6 years to break even. The warranty is 12 years on the 250SX and 6 years on the GL+6. Keep in mind that tankless units are expected to give twice the service of a water tank. That make sense since most water tanks rust out trying to hold all that water. I have used the 250SX for 2 months now. I'm tickled pink by the unit, but NOT because of my marginal energy savings. With the small tank in series, it acts a lot like the tank I replaced, except the hot water is endless, great for the Jacuzzi, and a lot of room is freed up in my garage. Bottom line: If you 1) have good water pressure (a must), 2) are able to install it yourself, 3) have other reasons besides energy savings to install, then I highly recommend it. If you are lacking on these 3 points then do yourself a favor and just replace your old hot water tank with another.

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #125FX NG Review

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater #125FX NGI live in a city apt., and must provide my own hot water. I replaced a 30 gal. tank with the HX (hydro pilot) model. It took some getting use to, it would shut down if I added too much cold to cool off the hot water. 2 1/2 yrs after installation, it doesn't always want to light. I have to run the hot water for 3 - 5 seconds, turn it off and turn it on again. Most always this works, but its an agravation. Bosch won't help, as I admitted I installed it in my bathroom, which voids the warranty, and Bosch won't give any technical advice for this other problem as a result. I installed a large vent in the lower half of the bathroom door, and have had no air intake problems. I am on the top floor and was able to vent out to the roof rather easily. I also have a CM detector/alarm in the bathroom near the unit which registers neglible amounts of CM.

"The place where you install the heater must have enough ventilation. The National Fire Codes do not allow gas fired water heater installation in bathrooms, bedrooms or any occupied rooms normally kept closed." from the installation manual, obtainable on the web. This is fine, and ample warning if you get a copy of the installation manual before you purchase the unit. The claim that hot water is instantaneous is not true. It actually takes longer than a heater with a tank, which has hot water standing by. The tankless takes cold water, and starts heating it a bit after the water starts to flow, but does come up to temperature pretty rapidly. In Europe (and foreign films) you see these right above the sink in the kitchen for a good reason. My kitchen is some 45 feet away from the bathroom, so it takes a little bit to get hot water, compounded by the fact that I have to turn the water on and off to fire up the unit.

"WaterValve (Part # 8707002649): The water valve on this heater should be serviced periodically. Lubricate component 36 on page 16 with a small amount of silicon, faucet or lithium grease every two years to keep its o rings fresh and pushrod sliding smoothly. Every 3-5 years replace component 36 on page 16."
Installation manual.

Unless you are technically proficient (able to install the unit your self) you will have to hire a plumber to do this. This makes the unit more expensive to maintain than a tank unit, perhaps eating up whatever savings you might realize not keeping a tank hot 24/7.

So, unless you have extra indoor space to stick this thing, are prepared for the maintenence routine, hopefully it will last twice as long as a tank model (20 yrs vs. 10 years) and will save on the purchase/installation after the first 10 years.

Savings: It's very difficult to compare energy usage between the tank/tankless models. I couldn't find any useful charts, etc to make a reasoned comparison. Perhaps if I was an engineer of some sort. I did have to replace my 12 yr old tank model, and liked the idea of not having to turn it down when I went away, etc. Also, the longevity of the unit is attractive, as well as the hydro (125HX) pilot is cool.

Bosch GWH-425-HN-N Tankless Water Heater, Indoor Use Review

Bosch GWH-425-HN-N Tankless Water Heater, Indoor UseWe replaced an electric 30 gallon hot water tank for this natural gas unit. The obvious difference, a mild reduction in hot water pressure. As for hot water temperatures, very comparable.I would say its not scalding hot out of the tap, but steamy. Not bad, given its winter in New England.Electric units are out of the question, the power requirements needed to raise the water temperature put them beyond the capacity of most homes in this climate. Our consumption is moderate, just two in the household. Can two use the hot water at the same time? Yes, the hot water pressure will again be reduced, but not uncomfortable for the one in the shower. One important note, the household uses half-inch plumbing, while the city water feed comes in on a three-quarters-inch pipe; larger pipe capacity could be a factor to consider.Electrical savings are modest, though we only have one month to compare.

NORITZ Outdoor Nat Gas Tankless Water Heater 9.3G/PM Review

NORITZ Outdoor Nat Gas Tankless Water Heater 9.3G/PMAfter comparing all the leading brands, we selected the Noritz due to the price / performance / reliabilitymade it a good value. We had the unit professionally installed, which took one day. The total cost to us was $2,900 all in. We expect $1,000 back from the federal tax rebate.
The performance of the unit is quite good. Our old $50 gal unit was in the attic but this unit was installed outside near our AC units. I was a little concerned about how long it would take to move the hot water around the house. It is really not a big issue. It takes about a minute to get to the master bath, which is the furtherest point from the unit.
The water is hot and endless... nothing to do but enjoy!
Reccommeded.

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater with Vent Hood #125FX LP Review

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater with Vent Hood #125FX LPI like this water heater quite a bit. This is a huge money saver if you only use hot water a few times a day. If you have people taking showers all day long, it is probably less so.

I researched these heaters on-line and found some people were pretty negative about them while other people were positive. I figured I would address the biggest complaints.

Complaint: It takes a while to get hot water.
Response: This is probably the biggest downside. It does take a bit longer to get hot water... this is less noticeable the longer it took to get hot water in the first place, however. If your point of use is far from your old tank, the extra delay is hardly noticeable.

Complaint: If you shut off the hot water and start it again you will get a burst of cold water.
Response: I've never observed this phenomenon. The hot water heater will shut off, and about bit of water must pass through it before it turns on again, but the thing is, the heat exchanger is still hot. So you are not going to get a burst of cold water in between uses of hot water, unless you've had the water off for a long time... in which case the water in your pipes is going to be cold as well.

Complaint: Not enough volume
Response: I've had no problem with volume of hot water with this model and the shower or dishwasher or any other appliance. I have it turned up all the way for the dishwasher, so this is the most restrictive setting. At any lower setting, or elsewhere in the US where the ground water isn't as cold as it is here, will have more water. They make a bigger model if you need to run two showers at once. That is not an issue for me.

Over all I'm very happy with this unit. The quality is excellent. The kit was complete. I've had no trouble with it. Installation is easy if you have basic plumbing skills. The hardest part - by far - of the installation is the venting. The exhaust gas is high temp, so you have to watch how close you get to combustible materials. This is a very good choice for anyone with an electric water heater, or someone who has a gas water heater that needs to be replaced.
