In-Sink-Erator W-152 Electric Water Heater Review

In-Sink-Erator W-152 Electric Water HeaterWe bought this as a point of use heater and it is performing well after a month of use. However, the flimsy construction of the outer skin and the annoying design that requires a front panel to be removed in order to adjust the temperature setting was quite a disappointment.

Rheem RTG20147 3"/5" Horizontal Direct Vent Kit for RTG-53DV Review

Rheem RTG20147 3'/5' Horizontal Direct Vent Kit for RTG-53DVWe ordered both the water heater and the vent kit. When we got ready to install, we noticed that the water heater nozzle is 3 inches in diameter, and the vent kit nozzle is 2 & 1/4 inches in diameter.Make any sense? No.I contacted Rheem and they advised that there is an adapter for this problem for $34.99.I requested an explanation as to why this was this way...other than the obvious money-making scheme.I have not heard back yet.So I can't actually review if the product works well or not, but I can tell you I was royally po'ed about this adapter thing.

Eemax EX280T2T Series Three Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Eemax EX280T2T Series Three Electric Tankless Water Heater***See Update Below***
The unit works well. Was easily installed. Water heat is fine for our small-demand house (2bed/2bath/1500SF). The only thing that takes some getting used to is the minimum flow requirement. There's no way to get any hot water without turning a given fauct on at over 50% capacity. And single-knob showers can get a little tricky to balance.
NOTEZ BIEN:
Before installing, verify that your grid tie-in is sufficient. My panel is 200A, but the utility company tied in with a wire only capable of carrying 100A. This was fine for my house until this unit was installed. It requires 3@40A breakers, which was no problem...plenty of room on the board. But now, whenever the hot water flows, the lights throughout the house start a pulsing. I've called my retail provider, my utilities service provider, and the service director several times over the last 2 weeks, and can't get anyone to get out here and run thicker copper. It's not too annoying, but I'm concerned that the wire's going to fry if they don't get their act together and figure out whose job it is to fix this.
****Update****
Even with the electrical issues taken care of, the unit I bought, which worked well for several months, started acting up on me. Intermittent hot/lukewarm was a major issue. No flow problems: was running a shower alone. After some time, I opened the box and noticed that the unit had a leak in one of the 3 "coils" (tubes, really). I called the manufacturer, they verified the warranty info, and sent me a new unit. The new unit worked for about 6 months before it also stopped providing hot water. Not sure how I ended up with 2 dogs, but that was enough. No leaking the second time around, but I gave up and went with a regular tank, as the house was by then a rental.
I'd drop it to one star if it wasn't for the great customer service I received.

Seisco RA-32 Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Seisco RA-32 Electric Tankless Water HeaterIf you are planning to purchase a Seisco Tankless Water Heater, you might just prefer just to flush your cash down the toilet. We have had one for just over a year and have had trouble 3 times. When you need parts, plan on paying for them and paying for shipping. There is not much of a warranty and customer service is very kind but ineffective. We love the idea of tankless but made a very poor decision going with this company. Please do not make the mistake we did unless you like a cold shower.

Rheem Tankless water heater for 1-2 bathroom homes, outdoor, LP - Model RTG53XP Residential Gas TankI have a tiny house and had to replace the galv piping with copper. Stiebel Eltron DHC 3-1 Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron DHC 3-1 Electric Tankless Water HeaterHad high expectations that this nice looking German engineered device would solve demand for instant hot water at a single sink. Not exactly "instant".It takes a while for the water to even get warm. The problem is the water needs to flow slowly in order to benefit from the electrical heater.Naturally that means a very low flow output.A small tank device would be better...but alas, is much more expensive to run in order to keep the water hot 24 hours a day. Also don't forget...This requires a new 30amp electrical circuit and water by-pass shut-off valves to be installed. Not for the handyman-challenged.

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1000P NG AquaStar 2-3/5 GPM Indoor Tankless Gas Water HeaterJust self-installed my 1000 P NG water heater I got from Amazon (1-week shipping was free).Took me a day (soldering copper pipe is not very easy for me).I replaced a 40-gallon tank unit.I live in a small beach house in Southern Califoria and needed to replace my 1997 tank unit and since the Bosch was actually less than a tank unit and I could gain much needed floor space, I gave it a try. After replacing my existing 3" venting with 4" double-wall, the total insatlled price was a little more than if I had bought another tank unit. This unit has a "234 therms/year" government rating versus "263" for the tank unit it replaced (so I don't expect to save much on my gas bill).I had researched tank-less water heaters and this Bosch unit does not require stainless steel venting which saves a lot of money over galvanized. As with all units I have read about, it's limitation is that you must use at least 1/2 GPM of hot water in order to get the unit to fire-up (no more trickle of hot water during shaving). The quality of the unit was OK-the drip pan must be user installed and requires modification to work, and the front cover was bent somewhat and makes adjustements in gas flow difficult.Read the users manual on-line before buying and you won't have any surprises.I operate the unit at it's lowest water flow setting (the right-hand knob) since this also means that the unit will fire at the lowest water flowrate.I also operate it at its lowest gas flow setting and the water is still REALLY hot, so I am not sure what all of the complaints are out there about luke warm water.Bosch states that every 2+ years, preventative maintenance is required (something not required with a tank unit), so keep that in mind before buying.

I'll right another review after a year or so, or, earlier if I have problems.

titan Review

titanI use two of these (single 3/4" line split into both units, then back to single 3/4" line out) as I live in the northeast and have a family of 8.With all three showers (low flow heads), the clothes washer, dishwasher, and the kitchen sink (can't forget the kitchen sink!) going, I had hot water. The units are set to just below medium. My electric use dropped 30% from the 40gal electric unit I had that only gave us about 10 minutes of hot water and we couldn't use multiple showers at the same time.I have had these units since 7/06.I did not have to adjust the temp during the winter.I am very satisfied.

Bosch AE125 PowerStar 4 GPM Indoor Electric Tankless Water Heater, White Review

Bosch AE125 PowerStar 4 GPM Indoor Electric Tankless Water Heater, WhiteMy wife and I bought this from Lowes in summer 2006 thinking it would save our energy bills even though the initial cost for the unit and the required installation for a new electrical service to it was expensive. Right out of the box, the electrician we hired to install it had to order from Bosch a replacement control board because the one we got was bad. Fast forward to February 2008, and we had issues with the control board again and no hot water for showers. Now we are screwed because that part is not covered in the warranty and costs roughly $300 dollars. Not to mention, it was difficult to reach Bosch Hot Water Technical Support because they put you on hold for God awful long time and they are really not that much help. All it is now is a hanging piece of junk on our wall. So, now my wife and I have decided to invest in a normal electric water heater that would just cost more or less the same as purchasing the control board. Buyers Beware! The concept is great but, I do not recommend getting this product.

Bosch 1600H NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water Heater Review

Bosch 1600H NG AquaStar 4.3 GPM Indoor Tankless Natural Gas Water HeaterEDIT - 1/11/08 -------------------------------------------------
I've been having trouble with the Aquastar lately. It still works but doesn't like to work when the furnance is running. I assumed the furnance was drawing down the gas pressure in the line but after having the gas company out and an HVAC technician they both concluded the pressure is steady and sufficient. Contacting Bosch technical support has proven to be an exercize in patience to say the least. Each phone call (there have been 3) has taken a minimum of 50 minutes on hold. I've spoken to three different techs and have been given three different solutions. First call, very nice lady, apolgized for the wait, I told her the problems and she sent me a new control box (didn't work). The second time I called, the tech told me it was my problem and not the Aquastar. He said I had insufficient gas pressure (I didn't), said I had a vent back draft (tested, I didn't) basically he blew me off. He gave me the phone number of a local tech (wasn't local-40 miles away) that I'd have to pay for (because it was my problem) to come and diagnose my Aquastar. I decided to call back because I was very unhappy with the technical support I had just received. My intent was to make a complaint, but on my third call I talked to yet another tech who diagnosed yet another possibility. He sent me another part to replace, which still hasn't solved the problem. Which is where I'm at at the moment.

I've done some more research on the internet and it seems that Bosch Hotwater tech support is reknown for poor service. Unfortunately that's something you only find out when the unit isn't working.

I'll have to change my recommendation from a buy to a don't buy at this point based solely on customer service. Hot water is not something you can readily do without for any period of time and if you do have a problem with the Aquastar, waiting days to have it fixed is not a solution.
Another curious observation, why is there such a wait for tech support? Must be a lot of broken Aquastars out there.

END EDIT ------------------------------------------------I installed the Aquastar 1600H myself in about 3 hours. I bought it at Lowes and like the other reviewer, had to go to HomeDepot to buy the 5" class B ducting. I gave the Lowes sales ppl an ear full about that but it just went in one ear and out the other.

If you're comfortable with sweeting copper and plumbing your own gas lines its really not that difficult. My biggest problem was positioning the unit so I could vent the exhaust gases. If you don't have a straight vent stack and have to feed the exhaust into the chimney like I did, it required placing the unit really low on the wall. You are required to vent straight up for the first 12" before you can elbow the vent. Along with the minimum run vs. rise of the vent pipe, it forced me to place the unit just barely a foot off the ground. Your situation may be different but keep it in mind. Also, it requires a minimum of 3/4" inside diameter black iron gas pipe. In some cases if you're tapping into the same gas line as your furnance, you may have to install 1" gas line. This unit requires a lot of BTU's and if you choke down below 3/4" it will not run properly. So that means no yellow flexible line to make the last connection. You'll have to hard plumb the iron pipe all the way to the unit.

There are both benifits and negatives to this unit. First the benifits. Long, long, long showers. Literally, you can take a shower all day. Then the next person in line doesn't have to wait for the water to heat back up. It's ready to go. Great for a family getting ready in the morning. Second, big savings on the gas bill. My bill dropped $20 the month after I installed this unit. I figure it will pay for itself in less than two years after the tax credit.

Now for the negatives. Low hot water pressure. That takes some getting used to. The unit has a maximum 4.3 gpm, but that's really unreasonable.(Take into consideration that I'm in the Northern USA and the water in coming into the house is at 50 degrees.) At that flow rate the water doesn't heat up above 90 degrees. That makes it warm not hot. You have to turn down the flow rate to 2.3 gpm to heat the water to 120 degrees. At that flow rate / pressure, if you open two hot water spigots anywhere in the house at the same time it becomes a trickle. There is no way you could run the shower or any other appliance like the dishwasher or washing machine at the same time. If you turn the Aquastar back up to 4.3 gpm you could, but you'll be taking a warm shower not hot (in my case).
Also, at 2.3 gpm, it takes a long time for the hot water to actually get to the faucet. It probably takes 4 to 5 times longer than it used to for hot water to flow from the tap than it did with the old tank system. For example, if I'm washing my hands, by the time I'm done lathering up and rinsing, the water is just now starting to get hot. I've come to realize its not even worth turning the hot water on for short burst of hot water like that.
It takes adaptation to get use to this, like this trick I use in the morning. I turn the hot water on and brush my teeth while the water is slowly making it's way to the tap. Once it's hot, then I turn on the shower. Otherwise I have to let the shower flow for what seems like a very long time before it starts getting up to temperature.

Would I recommend this unit. It depends. If you really need the ability to run two showers or two appliances at the same time, then no way. You'll have to go with the next unit up that has a faster flow rate. There's no way this unit can handle that.

But if you think you can adapt to the low flow rate and really enjoy taking all day hot showers while saving money on your gas bill then this is the unit for you. I really enjoy the savings and long showers.

One more thing. The manual says you have to clean the unit once a year to maintain its efficiency. That means disassembling some parts in the unit. Clean them and put it back together. I haven't had to do this yet, but its just one more thing to consider before you switch to tankless hot water.

Bosch GL6 Ariston 6-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater Review

Bosch GL6 Ariston 6-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water HeaterThis is our 2nd Ariston heater - the first is a 4 gallon under the kitchen sink.We got this one to sit in our basement bathroom and feed it, the main floor bathroom sink and a future 1/2 bath on the 2nd floor. It just makes so much sense to keep a small amount of hot water ready to use right near the fixture. That way you don't have to waste a bunch of water if you need hot water. These seem very well insulated, so I think that the standby losses are negligible. Our main heater is a gas tankless, and these really help improve the performance for intermittent uses such as washing hands or dishes.I just put this inline with the tankless, so that it can "smooth" out our hot water. The tankless works best for steady uses, such as showers and filling a dishwasher.Adding one of these Aristons gives you the best of all worlds.

Bosch GL4 Ariston 4-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater Review

Bosch GL4 Ariston 4-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water HeaterEver since we moved into our new house my wife has complained about how long it took the hot water to get to the kitchen sink from the hot water heater in the garage.Since installing the Ariston GL 4, she has been ecstatic!!Hot water is instant. It is such a pleasure not to have her complain about our former water problem.Even when I am "forced" to do the dishes, I can't complain about our lack of hot H2O. Installation was easy except for the ill-fitting two top fittings. They will accept the hose extentions (hardware store), but you must be firm and patient. It took away alot of our storage space beneath the sink, but it was worth it.

Bosch GL2.5 Ariston 2-1/2-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater Review

Bosch GL2.5 Ariston 2-1/2-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water HeaterI live in the northeast. It gets cold here.My basement is warmer than outdoors, but, despite copiously wrapping my pipes in insulation, I get cold water in my kitchen sink for something like 8-9 seconds (at full blast) before the water becomes passably warm.Working from home, having rambunctious teenagers and more than a few dogs, I do a lot of cleaning and hand-washing.I wasted a lot of water (water which was previously heated at some expense) trying just to get a little warm water.Worse, the dishwasher didn't change water fast enough to keep the water in the line warm, so the dishes would get rinsed in cold water every time, even if you use the water heat option for the wash.Certainly this is not a big problem, but I lived with it for five winters and decided this was the time to do something about it.

I purchased this point-of-use water heater (the smallest of three versions) so that it would fit underneath my kitchen cabinet.I've been using it for a few days now, and am thrilled that I get warm water every time, day or night, whatever happens, in about 1-2 seconds, max.

Now the challenges. It was relatively easy to hook up, as long as you can, for instance, install a new faucet, and are passably familiar with plumbing sizes and patch cords, like between your water line and sink, or between the water line and toilet, etc.I bought a new one from the line to the heater, and another from the heater to the sink. The most time-consuming thing was the drive to the hardware store. Some relatively strong turns of the attaching points, a little contorting under the sink to reconnect the hot water faucet (and a little help from the "shop light",) and it's not an overwhelming task.Don't be shy or hesitant to look carefully for leaks.Better to make adjustments or do tightening sooner rather than later, after something gets potentially damaged.

Possibly more challenging might be having an electrical outlet that can be dedicated to the water heater, which takes 1500 watts, and will certainly blow your circuit every time if you try to combine it with a dishwasher, microwave, toaster, or anything else "thirsty" (most things are) in the kitchen.

I am very pleased with the thermostat in this product, and have done a lot of trial-and-error adjusting to make it the right temperature for me (warm, but it won't burn you.)

I do have a "main" water heater, which heats water for the house, so if I am using a lot of hot water, the main water heater takes over, basically. This is okay with me, as it's cheaper to use my main gas water heater, but not cheaper to run a lot of water trying to get it.This seems a good compromise and a good solution for me.I recommend this product for anyone with my situation who can resolve the challenges of the plumbing adjustment and electrical requirements.

While I have only used this product for a few days, I have not noticed a large spike in my electrical use, and it does not seem like this is going to cost me lots to use.Hopefully the savings from using less water and less hot water will cover some of the cost of the convenience.

Bosch AE-9.5 PowerStar 1.5 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water Heater Review

Bosch AE-9.5 PowerStar 1.5 GPM Point-Of-Use Indoor Tankless Electric Water HeaterI tested the AE-9.5.If it worked as advertised, it would be a great little piece of equipment - but it doesn't. It is advertised to achieve an 84 degree rise at .75 gallons per minute. The best that I could do after ten tests was a 70 degree rise. Here are my test results.

Incoming water - 48 degrees
Gallons per minute - .75 GPM
Heated Water Temp - 118 degrees

I did hit 125 degrees or 77 degrees once but not for .75 gallons per minute.

For my test,I set the AE-9.5 on a table about 30 inches off the floor.I wired the unit to 240 volts.Actual voltage, 242.The heated water was directed into a two gallon pail using a two foot section of hose. The distance from the unit to the pail was minimized so as not to affect the results. I used a sealed thermometer to measure the water temp. Each test ran for two minutes.

I called the Bosch support line for help but it was after hours and they weren't able to answer my questions.
